Ryan Wintle Leaves Cardiff City After Five Years

Ryan Wintle is leaving Cardiff City when his current agreement ends this summer. The 28-year-old said the move is out of his control, closing a five-year spell that included promotion back to the Championship.

Wintle’s Cardiff run

Wintle joined Cardiff in June 2021 as a free agent from Crewe Alexandra and became a regular part of the squad. This campaign, he played 46 games and scored one goal, then was voted the club’s player of the year.

That combination of availability and recognition explains why his exit lands as more than a routine contract decision. Cardiff are losing a midfielder who stayed through the club’s immediate return to the Championship after one season in League One.

Wintle’s message to supporters was blunt. “I'm gutted to be writing this post, but unfortunately the time has come for me to say goodbye to Cardiff City, a decision that was completely out of my control” he wrote on social media. He added: “I've loved my five years at the club and have been lucky enough to meet and work with some truly terrific people along the way.”

He also thanked teammates, coaches, staff, and fans, saying: “I just want to say a massive thank you to my teammates, coaches, staff, and especially the fans for all the support you've shown me throughout my time here. It's been an absolute pleasure to represent this club.” He added: “This city will always hold a massive place in my heart, especially having started my family here.”

Perry Ng and Joel Bagan

Cardiff said Wintle will depart “at the end of his current agreement this summer... he leaves Cardiff City Stadium with our very best wishes for the future.” Perry Ng agreed a new contract this week to extend his stay at Cardiff City Stadium, while Joel Bagan is the remaining first-team player out of contract this summer.

For Cardiff, the next step is already clear: replace a midfielder who delivered 46 appearances, one goal, and a season-long presence through promotion and a Championship return. For Wintle, the exit ends a five-year run built on consistency more than noise.
