Celtic Win William Hill Premiership After Dramatic Final Day

Celtic won the William Hill Premiership in dramatic circumstances on the final day, and the SPFL said the match had ended before the trophy was awarded. The governing body also said millions watched the climax in Glasgow across Sky Sports and around the world.

SPFL Statement on Glasgow

“Firstly, we send our congratulations to Celtic on winning the William Hill Premiership in the most exciting of circumstances and send our commiserations to everyone at Heart of Midlothian following an incredible campaign.”

That was the SPFL’s opening line after a day that carried speculation about how the game finished. It also said the referee and match officials kept their cool on a dramatic day, and that it had been told by the match referee, before the trophy was awarded, that the match had ended and had not been abandoned.

Supporters on the Field

The SPFL also drew a hard line on the scenes that followed. “However, we utterly condemn the scenes which saw a number of Celtic supporters encroach onto the field of play.”

It added that supporters entering the field in any circumstances is wholly unacceptable and puts those participating and working at a match at risk. The statement also noted that entering the pitch in England and Wales has been a criminal offence since 1991, and urged anyone with information about any alleged criminal activity to contact Police Scotland.

Heart of Midlothian's Run

The other side of the final-day picture was Heart of Midlothian, whose campaign drew a public commiseration from the SPFL. The league described it as incredible, even as Celtic took the title in the climax of the William Hill Premiership.

For supporters who were watching the title race unfold in Glasgow, the practical takeaway is simple: the trophy decision stood after the match had finished, but the post-match field encroachment became the immediate issue the league chose to address next.
