Shonda Rhimes Leads Grey's Anatomy Texas Spinoff to Midseason 2027
ABC has ordered the grey's anatomy texas spinoff straight to series for midseason 2027. The untitled medical drama moves the franchise into rural West Texas, away from the West Coast setting that has defined every previous offshoot.
Shonda Rhimes, Meg Marinis and Ellen Pompeo are all attached in executive roles, with Marinis also co-creating and writing the series. That gives ABC a fourth Grey’s Anatomy franchise title after Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Station 19, while also making this the first offshoot built outside a big city.
Rhimes and Marinis in Texas
Shonda Rhimes co-created, wrote and executive produced the new series with Meg Marinis, while Rhimes and Betsy Beers executive produce alongside Marinis and Pompeo. Marinis said, “I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” and added, “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas.”
That Texas setting is the cleanest signal that ABC is not just extending a familiar brand line. It is building a new branch of the franchise around a rural medical center, which separates it from the character-led spinoffs that sent Addison to Private Practice in 2007 and Ben into Station 19 in 2018.
Grey’s Anatomy Thursday 10 p.m.
ABC’s plan places the new show in the same time period as Grey’s Anatomy, with the mothership airing in the fall and the spinoff following in midseason. The network also intends to keep the new series in Grey’s Anatomy’s Thursday 10 p.m. slot behind 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville.
That scheduling choice matters because it gives the franchise a built-in weekly lane instead of asking viewers to track the offshoot in a separate part of the week. The size of the order is still to be determined, and ABC’s upcoming Grey’s Anatomy season 23 order was expected to be trimmed for budget considerations, so the franchise is expanding while one of its core pieces is still being managed tightly.
Fourth Grey's Anatomy series
The new show becomes the fourth series in the Grey’s Anatomy franchise, and the first one set outside the West Coast or a big city. It is also the first offshoot not spinning directly from a series regular on the mothership, which is a quieter but meaningful break from the way the franchise has been built so far.
For now, the practical takeaway is simple: ABC is betting that the Grey’s brand can travel to rural West Texas without losing the audience relationship that has held for more than two decades. If that works, midseason 2027 will not just add another title to the lineup; it will test whether the franchise can still grow by changing geography instead of recycling old character exits.
