Verona Fire Burns Nearly 10 Acres North of Homeland

The verona fire broke out Tuesday on a hillside north of Homeland and quickly burned nearly 10 acres near Juniper Springs and Juniper Flats roads. Firefighters said three to four homes were in its direct path as crews moved to hold the line ahead of the flames.

The Riverside County Fire Department reported the blaze at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday. By 12:55 p.m., two Cal Fire air tankers that were requested for the fire had not yet reached the area.

Juniper Springs and Juniper Flats

Multiple engine and hand crews were sent to the scene after the fire was reported. Firefighters found flames moving at a rapid rate through medium vegetation, and crews worked to establish a defensive perimeter before the fire could press farther downhill.

Sheriff’s deputies closed streets in the area for public safety. The fire was described as non-injury, and the cause was not immediately known.

Riverside County response

The fire’s speed left little margin for the homes directly in its path. The combination of engine crews, hand crews and air support shows the county’s first line of response when a hillside fire starts close to homes and begins pushing through brush in wind.

For residents near Homeland, the practical issue was access: streets were closed, crews were building a perimeter, and air tankers were still en route while the fire kept moving through the hillside area.
