Emmet Sheehan Starts on 4 Days Rest in Dodgers - Padres
Emmet Sheehan started for the Dodgers in dodgers - padres on Tuesday at Petco Park on four days rest. It was Los Angeles’ first start on four days rest this season, and it came in the middle game of the series.
Sheehan’s Turn at Petco Park
Sheehan had just thrown six innings with six strikeouts and two runs allowed in a win over San Francisco last Thursday, then shifted into this spot so Shohei Ohtani could start Wednesday’s series finale directly in front of an off day. That swap gave the Dodgers a fresh arm for a division game without waiting for a longer rest cycle.
The start was Sheehan’s third career outing on four days rest. He had struck out nine in 4 2/3 innings with one run allowed on that rest schedule on September 21, 2023.
Dodgers Rotation Pattern
The Dodgers have leaned more heavily on extra rest since the signings of Yoshinobu Yamamoto in December 2023 and Roki Sasaki last year. Ohtani’s return to pitching last June also made it easier to keep a six-man rotation while carrying eight relievers.
The numbers show how uncommon Tuesday was even by Los Angeles standards. The Dodgers had nine starts on four days rest last season after excluding openers, relievers making spot starts, and final-week shenanigans, but only 15 starts on five days rest and 32 on longer rest through Monday this year.
Since the start of 2024, Tuesday was the Dodgers’ 30th start on four days rest. In 2024, their first such start came in the 15th game of the season, when Bobby Miller allowed two runs in four innings on the road in Minnesota on April 10. Last year, Tony Gonsolin handled the first one on May 11 and threw five scoreless innings in the 41st game of the season.
Sheehan and the Series Schedule
Tuesday also fell as the Dodgers’ 49th game of 2026, a point in the season where they have already shown more willingness to use different rest patterns than a traditional rotation would allow. Yamamoto has pitched with at least five days rest in every major league appearance except one World Series start last November, and Sasaki is on the same extra-rest plan.
For Sheehan, the task is simple enough: hold the line again on short rest and keep the Dodgers moving through the series with Ohtani lined up for Wednesday in front of the off day. For the team, the move shows how the rotation is being managed around specific matchups, not around the old default of every fifth day.
