Emery Can Reach Five Europa League Titles at Tüpraş Stadyumu
Unai Emery arrives at tüpraş stadyumu with a chance to do what no coach has done before: win the UEFA Cup or Europa League five times and do it with a third club. Aston Villa are one win from a title that would finish the job in Istanbul and add another line to a season already built on Europe and fourth place.
Emery’s 600th win
Last week’s 4-2 victory over Liverpool delivered more than fourth place. It was Emery’s 600th career win as a coach, and it secured Champions League qualification with one match to spare.
That run has carried into Europe. Villa finished second in their group, then beat Lille and Bologna in the knockout rounds before falling 1-0 in the first leg of their semi-final and responding with a 4-0 second-leg win over Nottingham Forest.
Sevilla, Villarreal, and Villa
Emery’s record in this competition already stands at four titles: three with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and one with Villarreal in 2021. A fifth would move him beyond the shared mark once held by Giovanni Trapattoni and Jose Mourinho for winning the UEFA Cup or Europa League with two different clubs.
Trapattoni won the competition twice with Juventus and once with Inter. Mourinho lifted it with Porto and Manchester United. Emery would be taking the next step by adding a third club to the list.
Aston Villa’s final push
This is Emery’s sixth continental final as a manager. His previous trip ended in 2019, when Arsenal reached the Europa League final and Chelsea beat them.
Aston Villa are trying to win their second continental title after lifting the European Cup in 1982. They have not won a major trophy since 1996, which gives this final a sharper edge for a club that has already climbed back into the Champions League and now faces one last step in Europe.
The pressure sits on both sides of the same result. Villa can turn a strong season into a trophy, and Emery can turn one more final into a record that no other coach has matched.
