Victor Lindelöf Faces Emery Decision for Aston Villa Final
victor lindelöf has put Unai Emery in a clean but awkward spot. Ten of Aston Villa’s starting XI for the Europa League final are already set, and the manager’s only real dilemma is whether to start Amadou Onana or Lindelof.
Onana is expected to be fit enough to feature, but perhaps not for the full 90 minutes. That leaves Emery weighing whether to use the midfielder from the start or hold him back as a late option, while Boubacar Kamara’s absence narrows the safety net in midfield.
Lindelöf and Villa’s back three
Lindelof has not played since the semi-final, yet he has been consistently strong through the season and has given Villa a different shape when they have the ball. He tucks in alongside Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres to form a back three, and that lets Matty Cash push on down the right.
That structure has looked more solid and controlled with Lindelof in place. For Emery, that is the trade-off: a steadier build-up and a fuller right side if Lindelof starts, or a more aggressive midfield runner if Onana gets the nod.
Onana’s late-game value
Onana still offers qualities Villa may need at different points in the final. He carries the ball aggressively through midfield, brings a goal threat, and can change the physical dynamic of a match.
He also fits a narrower role if Villa are protecting a lead. Emery could bring him on for Emiliano Buendía, which would add power without asking him to cover the full match load.
The first leg of the semi-final showed why this call matters. Villa took a risk with Onana there and it backfired, so Emery now has to decide whether to trust that option again or stick with the balance Lindelof has supplied. Douglas Luiz feels slightly out of the picture among the manager’s trusted choices, which makes the decision even more focused on those two names.
