Prince William Explains Why Does Prince William Support Aston Villa

Prince William said he chose Aston Villa because he wanted why does prince william support aston villa to lead him away from the usual powers and into a club that could deliver more emotional rollercoaster moments. He tied that choice to school friends who backed Villa, plus a pull toward the history and atmosphere he found around the club.

Prince William and Villa Park

His explanation goes back to school days, when he said most of his classmates supported Manchester United or Chelsea and he did not want to follow the run of the mill teams. He also said he had friends who supported Aston Villa, and one of his first FA Cup games was Bolton against Villa in 2000.

Prince William said the matchday feeling mattered too. “It was fantastic, I sat with all the fans with my red beanie on, and I was sat with all the Brummie fans and had a great time. It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie and I really felt that there was something I could connect with,” he said of that early experience.

From Paul Merson to 1982

He later connected that loyalty to the players and the club’s past. In February 2020, he said Paul Merson’s presence at Villa made him think it was a club he could support, and he added that being born in 1982, the year Aston Villa won the European Cup, made the club’s history feel close to him.

William has also kept showing up. He was photographed in an executive box at Villa Park during the 0-0 Premier League draw against Sunderland in November 2013, then attended the 2015 FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal, where he sat in the Royal Box alongside then owner Randy Lerner, presented the trophy to Arsenal and handed out runners-up medals to Tim Sherwood’s players.

William's long Villa trail

That run continued with a visit to Villa Park for the 1-0 Championship win over Cardiff City in April 2018, followed by the play-off final defeat to Fulham at Wembley in May 2018. He was also present at Carrow Road in the 2019/20 season for the 5-1 win over Norwich, spotted at a match against Nottingham Forest in April last year, and at the Europa Conference League semi-final against Olympiacos in May.

After Villa reached Europe’s premier competition, he wrote on X, “We are Champions League! A historic season and an amazing achievement. Thanks to Unai, the whole squad and everyone at Aston Villa. Can't wait for ne”. For Villa supporters, the pattern is clear: this is not a one-off royal appearance, but a supporter who chose the club for its unpredictability and has kept turning up for years.
