Hruncakova Defeats Andreescu Qualifying in Three Sets
hruncakova defeats andreescu qualifying, and Bianca Andreescu’s Grand Slam return will have to wait after a 7-6, 4-6, 4-6 loss to Viktoriá Hrunčáková on Wednesday. The Canadian was pushed out in the second round of French Open qualifying and did not reach the final round for a Roland Garros main-draw spot.
Andreescu-Hrunčáková at Roland Garros
Andreescu, who last played a Grand Slam at the 2024 US Open and lost in the first round, took the opener in a tiebreak but could not finish the job. Hrunčáková closed it out by taking the next two sets, leaving Andreescu one win short of the final qualifying round.
The match stayed tight on serve. Andreescu was out-aced 11-8, converted three of 12 break-point chances and surrendered five of 11 break-point opportunities, a spread that left her chasing points when the match tightened.
Galarneau Keeps Canada Alive
Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Que., gave Canada something to track later in the day. He moved into the third and final round of qualifying by beating Brazil’s Pedro Boscardin Dias 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Galarneau handled the pressure on big points better than Boscardin Dias did. He fended off 15 of 17 break-point opportunities and earned three breaks in seven chances, then set up a final qualifying match against Italy’s Federico Cina for a place in the Roland Garros main draw.
Draxl Falls Out
Canada’s qualifying picture tightened further when Liam Draxl was eliminated by Jesper De Jong of the Netherlands, 6-4, 1-6, 3-6. With Andreescu out and Draxl gone, Galarneau was left as the last Canadian standing with one match to play.
Andreescu’s most recent major win came at Wimbledon in 2024, when she reached the third round, but this qualifying result means she still has work to do before she gets back into a Grand Slam main draw. Galarneau now carries the country’s only remaining path into Paris.
