Onana to Report in Mid-July as United Plan Summer Exit
Andre Onana plans to report for Manchester United pre-season training in mid-July, even though the club want to move him on this summer. That leaves United preparing for the new campaign with his future still unresolved and their goalkeeping group already shifting around him.
Onana and the Wrexham date
Onana will complete his loan stint at Trabzonspor on Friday, the same day the Turkish side meet Konyaspor in the Turkish Cup final in Antalya. United then return for pre-season training in mid-July before facing Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July.
He is part of a small group of senior United players who will not be involved in the World Cup, and the expectation is that those players will form the core of the squad for the Wrexham game. United will add a large number of academy players to that group.
United’s goalkeeping shuffle
Onana lost his place at the start of the season to Altay Bayindir, while Senne Lammens went on to establish himself as United’s first-choice goalkeeper. Tom Heaton is about to sign a new one-year contract, adding another experienced option to the picture.
That leaves United with several moving parts in the same position group. Bayindir and Lammens are both set to be at the World Cup, while Radek Vitek’s future is still to be decided after his loan spell at Bristol City.
Onana’s season split
Onana made only one appearance for United this season, coming in the EFL Cup defeat at League Two Grimsby. He then played 29 league games for Trabzonspor, helping them finish third and qualify for Europe ahead of Friday’s final.
For United, the immediate issue is simple: a goalkeeper they want to move on is planning to walk back into pre-season when the squad reconvenes. If his status is still unchanged by 18 July, the club’s opening friendly in Helsinki will ask the same question in public that it is already asking behind the scenes.
