Neymar Doubtful as Santos Vs San Lorenzo Turns on Group D
Santos vs San Lorenzo lands on Wednesday with Santos needing a win to keep their 2026 Copa Sudamericana hopes alive. Neymar is a major doubt after a right calf injury against Coritiba, and Alexi Stival has a selection problem before matchday five at Vila Belmiro.
Vila Belmiro Pressure
Santos sit bottom of Group D with three points from four games. Their record is blunt: three draws and one defeat, and only the group winner advances directly to the last 16. San Lorenzo lead the section on six points, so the table leaves Santos with little room to play for anything except victory.
The sides already shared a 1-1 draw on matchday three, which is the sort of result Santos cannot afford to repeat now. Another draw would leave San Lorenzo in a strong position and Santos still chasing the group from behind.
Neymar and Stival
Neymar’s injury complicates the picture further. He suffered the right calf problem against Coritiba and is unlikely to be fit for the match at Vila Belmiro, leaving Santos without their most recognisable attacking option in a game they need to control.
Stival also has Luan Peres ruled out after taking a ball to the body, so the coach must manage the front end and the back line at the same time. Santos lost 3-0 to Coritiba in their last domestic match, a result that left them 16th in the Brasileiro on 18 points and level with Corinthians, who occupy the relegation zone.
San Lorenzo's edge
San Lorenzo arrive from a different competitive place even if their recent form is not spotless. They were knocked out of the 2026 Torneo Apertura by River Plate on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the round of 16, but in Group D they have the cushion that Santos do not. A draw on Wednesday would keep the leaders well placed.
The historical edge is also tight. Their previous meeting in the current Sudamericana campaign ended 1-1, and their 2021 Copa Libertadores encounter in Brasilia finished 2-2. That pattern fits the stakes: Santos need a clean result, while San Lorenzo can live with a point and protect first place. For Santos, anything short of a win leaves their route to the last 16 hanging on other results they do not control.
