Ajay Mitchell Injury: Thunder Guard Averaging 21.2 Points in Six Starts
Ajay Mitchell injury has pushed the second-year Oklahoma City guard into the Thunder starting five, and he has answered with 21.2 points per game in six starts. Jalen Williams has been out since straining his hamstring in Game 2 of the first-round series against the Phoenix Suns.
Mitchell’s six-start run
Mitchell’s workload changed fast. He moved into Williams’ spot and posted steady scoring across six games, giving Oklahoma City production it needed while one of its top guards stayed sidelined.
The biggest night came in Game 4 of the second-round sweep against the Los Angeles Lakers, when Mitchell scored a playoff career-high 28 points. Oklahoma City finished that series last week by eliminating Los Angeles in four games.
Williams and the Thunder rotation
Williams had averaged 17.1 points per game during the regular season, so the Thunder entered the playoffs with a clear scoring void once he went down. Mitchell’s six-game stretch has narrowed that gap more than most expected from a second-year guard.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander summed up the internal view of Mitchell after the draft: “He’s a gamer. Works super hard. He’s never shaken by the moment.” That has shown up in a role that now carries real weight for Oklahoma City as it moves deeper into the postseason.
Jalen Williams and Game 1
Williams could return for Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against the San Antonio Spurs. If he is back, the Thunder will have a harder choice to make on usage, but Mitchell has already made his case for minutes after taking advantage of the opening created by the hamstring strain.
