Wilson De Courcey Rejects Newcastle Knights Two-Year Deal

Wilson De Courcey has rejected the newcastle knights' offer of a two-year contract extension, and the club has already taken it off the table. The 20-year-old’s decision leaves Newcastle looking thinner at centre, with Dane Gagai set to depart at season’s end and only two first-grade centres listed.

De Courcey’s brief rise

De Courcey’s first-grade run was short and uneven. He made his debut in Round 5 against the Canberra Raiders, spent 40 minutes off the bench, then started against the Wests Tigers one round later.

That start did not last. Justin Holbrook axed him at half time against the Tigers, after the club had already put the extension in front of him. The offer was on the table before that mid-game change, which makes the rejection a sharper turn for both sides.

Knights centre options

The numbers behind the move are what tighten the story. De Courcey has played seven NSW Cup games this season and scored seven tries in those appearances, while averaging 136 metres per game. Even with that form, the first-grade picture at Newcastle is now narrow.

Bradman Best and Asu Kepaoa are the club’s only two first-grade centres, and Kepaoa has played only reserve grade this season. Kyle McCarthy is another option, but Holbrook would most likely turn to Fletcher Sharpe or Fletcher Hunt if the Knights need a centre fill-in.

Holbrook’s depth test

For Holbrook, the immediate issue is not De Courcey’s exit alone. It is the combination of the rejected extension, Gagai’s departure, and a first-grade centre group that can be counted on one hand. Newcastle had viewed De Courcey as a long-term centre option despite his struggles in the top grade, but that plan has now shifted.

That leaves the Knights with a smaller pool and fewer easy fixes in the middle of the backline. If injuries or form changes hit again, the club’s next move looks set to come from Sharpe, Hunt, or McCarthy rather than from the player it tried to keep for two more years.
