Residents Face Chester Road Closure for Big Weekend — Sunderland Weather
sunderland weather brings a three-day road shutdown for Penshaw residents living opposite Herrington Country Park. Sunderland City Council will close almost two miles of the A183 Chester Road from the A19 to Chistlehurst Road between May 22 and 24, with the road shut from 08:00 until 01:00 each day.
Joan Everett, who has lived in the village for 51 years, said she feared she would be unable to drive anywhere once the closure begins. She said: "It will be hectic, I don't think anybody is happy about it."
Penshaw residents and permits
The council is issuing two permits per household to access surrounding roads, and a letter advised residents to park in the streets behind rather than on Chester Road if they want to reach their cars. Everett was blunt about that arrangement: "Okay we've got permits, but there's no way we can park around the back [as there is no space], if you wanted to go out anywhere, you can't."
Bill McGlen, who has lived in the village for 32 years, said the road closure will change how drivers approach the area during the event. He said: "It will look like chaos, there will be people coming with cars not knowing the road is closed," and added: "It is what it is, it's good for the area but at the same time I believe it could have been better."
Herrington Country Park closures
Sunderland City Council said the closures will help "manage access safely" as about 100,000 fans are expected to arrive in the village when the event returns to Wearside after more than 20 years. The council will enforce the road closure for the entire duration of the Big Weekend's return, and the route through Penshaw will stay shut while the crowds move around Herrington Country Park.
The closure also affects trade. Penshaw Farm Shop and Tea Room said it will not be able to trade for the majority of the three-day event, and Love Lily said the same. For residents trying to leave by car, the permits and parking advice are the only steps set out in the council's letter, while the road itself stays closed through the event window.
For people living on Chester Road, the practical choice is now narrow: use the household permits, park away from the frontage if they can, and plan around a road that will not stay open during the busiest part of the weekend.
