Joe Schoen Status Unclear After John Harbaugh Hire

joe schoen is still the Giants’ general manager under John Harbaugh, but the team has not said whether he will be let go or get a contract extension. The front office has settled into a new hierarchy with the head coach at the top, and Schoen’s place in it is still being sorted out.

Harbaugh Takes Control

Schoen remains in place, yet there has not been any word on his status since Harbaugh was hired. Two chances to extend him have already passed, first after Harbaugh’s hiring and again after the draft.

Ownership is said to like Schoen, which keeps him from looking like a lame-duck executive in the usual sense. But that goodwill has not turned into a new deal, and the decision now sits with the people running the new structure.

Giants Front Office Shift

Dawn Aponte now reports to Harbaugh, and the video and analytics departments report to Aponte instead of Schoen. That is the clearest sign the Giants have moved authority upward around the head coach.

Kevin Abrams reported to Schoen for four years before he was dismissed, and the rest of the front office stayed intact outside that change and Aponte’s arrival. Schoen and his staff are still handling the months before the season by scouting draft prospects, the waiver wire and other teams, but the chain of command above them has changed.

Ryan Poles Contract Comparison

The Bears gave general manager Ryan Poles an extension in July to sync his contract with coach Ben Johnson’s. That kind of alignment has not happened in New York, even with Harbaugh now running the football side and the Giants operating under a new power structure.

Schoen said the day after last season ended that “the length of his contract doesn’t assure job security.” That line fits where things stand now: he is still on the job, but if Harbaugh wants a new general manager after the season, the Giants have left themselves room to make that change.
