Mason Cox Hints at America Return if Single — Fremantle Dockers
Mason Cox says his fremantle dockers future may end with a move back to America if he does not find a partner before his AFL career is over. The 35-year-old has 18 months left on his current deal, and he framed the decision around family and life away from footy, not just football.
Mason Cox and the 18-month clock
Cox told Pete & Kymba on Mix94.5 that his move to Australia had not improved his love life. He put it bluntly: “No, seriously, put a few resumes together,” and added, “I’m looking at the call line, and nothing has come up, so that’s good.”
The more serious line came next. “I think one of the biggest things for if I stay in Australia is whether or not I find a partner in the next few years,” he said. That leaves his next 18 months as more than a football contract. For Cox, it also runs against a personal deadline.
Carlton cheers at Optus Stadium
The move has already carried him from Collingwood to WA after he was let go last year. Cox made his Dockers debut in the derby, then kicked two goals against Carlton the following week, drawing some of the loudest cheers at Optus Stadium.
That quick rise matters because it shows how fast he has settled in on the field even as his off-field plans remain unresolved. Fremantle fans embraced the 35-year-old after those two goals, but his comments suggest the long-term answer still depends on what happens away from the ground.
Fremantle's 10th straight win
His family ties came through in the strongest part of his interview. “I’ve got a contract here for the next 18 months, and like my brother’s having a kid soon, so if I’m away from the family, there’s got to be a decent reason to be away from the family if I’m not playing footy anymore,” he said.
That is the friction point in the story. Fremantle was looking for a club-record 10th straight win on Friday, but Cox is already weighing a post-career move that could take him closer to his family in America if the next few years do not go the right way. For now, his football life in WA is secure for 18 months; what comes after that is tied to a much more personal choice.
