Mason Cox weighs America return if partner never arrives
Mason Cox says his stay in Australia could end if he does not find a partner in the next few years. The 35-year-old Fremantle premiership ruck said he has 18 months left on his contract, but that a move back to America is likely if footy ends before he settles down.
Mason Cox and Fremantle
Cox’s future is tied to more than football now. After being let go by Collingwood last year, he moved to Western Australia, made his Fremantle debut in the derby and kicked two goals against Carlton the following week.
On Pete & Kymba on Mix94.5, he put the point plainly: “I think one of the biggest things for if I stay in Australia is whether or not I find a partner in the next few years,” he said. He added, “I’ve got a contract here for the next 18 months, and like my brother’s having a kid soon, so if I’m away from the family, there’s got to be a decent reason to be away from the family if I’m not playing footy anymore.”
Love Life and the Call Line
Cox said the move to Western Australia had not improved his love life. Asked about that side of life, he joked, “No, seriously, put a few resumes together,” then added, “I’m looking at the call line, and nothing has come up, so that’s good.”
He is 35 and has already built a profile in the west after arriving from Collingwood, where he was let go last year. He has also been part of a Fremantle group that was chasing a club-record 10th straight win on Friday, while he weighs whether his post-footy life will still be in Australia.
Australia After Footy
The timeline now stretches across the next 18 months, and the football piece is only one part of it. Cox’s comments put a personal deadline on a bigger decision: if he does not find someone before his AFL career is over, he expects America to become the likelier landing spot.
For Fremantle supporters, that leaves his short-term future clear and his long-term one open. He is in place for now, he has already made an impact on the field, and the next stage may depend on whether his life in Australia finds the off-field match he says he still needs.
