Roy Robertson Harris Tears Achilles During Giants OTAs

Roy Robertson Harris tore his Achilles during practice at Giants OTAs yesterday. The injury landed during offseason work and hits a defensive line that had already lost Dexter Lawrence last month.

He had been working with the first-string defense before the injury, and the Giants had signed him to a two-year, $9 million contract a year ago. Robertson-Harris also started all 17 games last season, which made him one of the steadier pieces on the line entering this spring.

An Achilles tendon tear is almost always season-ending, so this is not a short-term setback. It leaves the Giants leaning harder on DJ Reader and Shelby Harris, with rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis also pushed into a bigger role in the rotation.

The timing is rough for a unit that had already taken a hit when the Giants traded away Dexter Lawrence last month. Robertson-Harris is now the second Giant to suffer a torn Achilles during offseason work, after rookie cornerback Thaddeus Dixon went down last week.

That leaves the Giants thinner in the middle of the defense before camp even opens, and it puts more of the load on the players still standing. For Robertson-Harris, the next step is recovery from a injury that usually ends a season before it starts.
