Sam Darnold Understands Vikings’ Move to J.J. McCarthy
sam darnold says he fully understands why the Vikings moved on after his 14-3 season as their starter. He framed Minnesota’s choice as a business decision, and said he sees the logic in building around J.J. McCarthy on a rookie deal.
Sam Darnold and Minnesota
“I totally understand the move to go with the younger quarterback on a rookie deal, and signing these veteran players that you can maybe pay a little bit more while he’s on his rookie deal, especially if you believe in him,” Darnold said on The San Clemente Podcast. “Yeah, the business side of it, I totally understand.”
He also praised McCarthy directly: “I think J.J. [McCarthy] is a good player. I think he’s going to be a really good player in this league. I truly believe that.”
McCarthy, Jones, and the Vikings plan
The Vikings traded up from No. 11 to No. 10 to draft McCarthy, and they tried to keep Daniel Jones before he went to the Colts. That left Minnesota weighing whether to make the kind of commitment to Darnold that could have kept McCarthy on the bench for too long.
Darnold’s view lines up with the contract math he described. He signed a three-year, $100.5 million deal with the Seahawks that included a one-year out, and he received a base package of $37.5 million in the first season. This year, he is making $27.5 million.
Seattle and the quarterback market
The move also shows how fast the market changed around him. Darnold was coming off the 14-3 season in Minnesota, but the Vikings still moved toward a younger, cheaper quarterback structure while he shifted to Seattle.
That choice fits a franchise that has not won a playoff game since 2019 and has gone 0-2 in the postseason under Kevin O’Connell. It also explains why Minnesota explored alternatives this year, including Kyler Murray as the McCarthy backup plan, before settling on the path it wanted.
For Darnold, the message was plain: he understood the Vikings’ call, and he understood what it said about where they wanted to put their money next.
