Berrington's catch seals 2-run Scotland win over USA — Bbc Cricket

Richie Berrington took the catch that cricket will remember from Kirtipur. Scotland beat the USA by two runs on the DLS Method after rain turned a high-scoring chase into a final-over squeeze.

The win moved Scotland to the top of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 standings. It also strengthened their push toward one of the top four places that lead to the Qualifier event for the 50-over World Cup.

Berrington at the boundary

The decisive play came in the final over, when Berrington held a superb diving catch to dismiss Saiteja Mukkamalla for 104. The USA had needed 16 runs in that over, and the finish left Scotland with the narrowest possible margin.

Berrington said after the match: "It was a pretty important moment, so I'm luck it stuck in my hands". He added: "That was a fantastic knock and once again we've gone down to the wire. We made it tougher than we would have liked but really important that we held our nerve."

Scotland's 321/6

Scotland had put 321 for 6 on the board before rain cut the USA target to 249 in 32 overs. Brandon McMullen set the tone for that total, then carried the match again with the ball.

McMullen was named Player of the Match after scoring 55 and taking two wickets. That all-round return gave Scotland a second route into the result, because the chase still reached the last over even after the revised target.

League 2 pressure

The game was never a comfort for Scotland. The USA reached the final over with a live chance, and Mukkamalla's 104 kept them within sight until Berrington closed it out.

Berrington summed up the rain delay and the scramble that followed: "It took us a while to get going again after the rain break. I'm just pleased we managed to close it out. We're finding a way to get over the line." That is the part Scotland will carry forward from Kirtipur: a result that put them top and kept the route to the Qualifier in reach.
