Duffer Brothers Executive Produce The Boroughs’ Eight-Episode Netflix Run

The duffer brothers are behind Netflix’s new eight-episode sci-fi mystery series The Boroughs, which is now streaming. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the show adds another high-visibility genre title to Netflix’s slate and ties the project to the team associated with Stranger Things.

Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews

Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews created The Boroughs, giving the series a creator-driven base before the Duffer Brothers stepped in as executive producers. That pairing matters in practical terms: Netflix has an eight-episode run built around a new sci-fi mystery rather than a long-order franchise launch, so the first season has to establish its world quickly.

The series centers on Sam, a recently widowed new resident played by Alfred Molina, who discovers that his friend Jack has been killed by a mysterious, alien-like creature feeding on his brain fluid at night. Jack is played by Bill Pullman. From there, Sam joins Judy, Art, Wally, and Renee in investigating the threat.

New Mexico retirement community

The Boroughs is set in a picturesque desert retirement community in New Mexico, where the surface calm hides monsters in the walls and a rigid order maintained by the owners. Judy is played by Alfre Woodard, Art by Clarke Peters, Wally by Denis O'Hare, and Renee by Geena Davis. That cast gives the series a veteran-heavy lineup, which is useful for a story that leans on ensemble dynamics rather than one lead carrying every scene.

One figure drives the mythology back to 1949: Blaine, Anneliese, and the rest of their cabal of staff have not aged, gotten sick, or died since then because they drink Mother’s blood. Mother, the ancient supernatural entity at the center of the series, hatched from an egg Blake — formerly known as Marcus — discovered in a copper mine on the land that later became the Boroughs.

Mother and the cave

Jeffrey Addiss said of Sam’s connection to Mother, “He’s always stuck in the moment that he lost [his wife], so he’s got a foot in two different times,” and that line points to the show’s real pressure point: Sam is investigating a threat while carrying a private break in time of his own. Mother wants to die and intends to do so in the cave where her egg originally hatched, which gives the season a clear destination inside its eight episodes.

For viewers, the immediate move is simple: the full season is available now, so the question is not whether the show will arrive, but whether its mix of creature mystery, veteran cast, and Duffer Brothers involvement earns enough traction to justify more after these eight episodes.
