Donnie Wahlberg Sends Danny Reagan to Patrol in Boston Blue Season 1 Finale

Danny Reagan hits the street in uniform with Sean in the boston blue season 1 finale, closing Season 1 on the patrol assignment that finishes his transfer from the NYPD to the Boston PD. The hour ends with Danny and his rookie son working side by side, a choice that pushes the family story into the job itself.

Sean outranks Danny

Brandon Sonnier said the transfer requires a short period on patrol before an officer fully moves over from another department to the Boston PD. That rule sends Danny back to the beginning, and it puts Sean in the unusual position of technically outranking his father for a little while.

“You can't skip directly to detective. And so Danny, has owed that for several episodes,” Sonnier said. “He's owed that patrol time.” The finale uses that assignment to turn a bureaucratic step into the season’s last scene, with Danny in uniform and Sean telling him how they do things that day.

Lena Silver’s regret

Brandon Margolis said, “For us, so much of this season was a journey of getting Danny established in a new place and getting to unpack his partner Lena's [Sonequa Martin-Green] biggest regret.” He also said the finale gives context that helps Lena Silver as she works to resolve a major issue, which keeps the episode from playing as a simple handoff into next season.

The season also ends with another member of the Reagan family at the Silver table, extending the show’s blended-family frame beyond Danny and Sean. Margolis said, “For Danny by the end of the season, having him fully surrounded by a family that he's chosen, so ending the season with him not just with Sean at the [Silver's] table but with another member of the Reagan family there and having this sense of community felt like the natural climax to what he'd been building towards all season, which was stating and claiming his place.”

Boston Blue Season 2

Season 1 closes with Danny and Sean working together away from the shadow of Frank Reagan and Henry Reagan, which is the clearest signal for where the show is headed next. Margolis said, “Danny came to this city for Sean, because Sean was injured. He stayed for Sean, so he has been looking out for him all season, and it felt really sweet and sort of fitting that the season would end with him partnered with Sean. Them doing the job together was a really fun opportunity for us.”

The second season will continue Danny and Sean’s journey, so the finale is less an ending than a reset: Danny has his place in Boston, Sean has earned leverage over him on the job, and the family bond now sits inside the patrol car instead of outside it.
