Guillermo Martinez Gets Special Permission for Liga MX Final
Javier Aguirre gave guillermo martinez and Érik Lira special permission to leave Mexico national team concentration and attend the Liga MX final. The exception let both players support their clubs at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, but only from the stands.
Aguirre and the final
The decision covered the second leg between Pumas and Cruz Azul, scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 2025 at 19:00 hours in Ciudad Universitaria. Martínez is a Pumas player, while Lira plays for Cruz Azul, and both had competed with their clubs throughout Clausura 2026.
Aguirre said the move felt fair because the two players had been with their teams all tournament. He added that it was healthy for them to greet their teammates and stand with the defeated side: "Me parece justo. Compitieron con ellos (Pumas y Cruz Azul), que vayan a saludar a sus compañeros me parece sano. Lo agradecerán, no le veo nada de malo a celebrar o estar hombro con hombro con los derrotados".

The permission stopped at attendance. Neither player was allowed to take the field, and both had to report back to national team concentration after the final. For Mexico, the arrangement kept the pair available while still allowing them to appear at one of the biggest club matches on the calendar.
For Pumas and Cruz Azul, the exception meant two national-team players could be present for the match that decided the Clausura 2026 final without crossing into competition. It left Aguirre drawing a firm line between being there for their clubs and returning to the national team setup once the night ended.
