Stuart Mclean Dead at 45 as Homicide Probe Opens

stuart mclean, the Virgin River actor, was found dead in Lions Bay, British Columbia, after police shifted his missing-person case into a homicide investigation. He was 45. The case moved over a six-day span, from the last sighting at his home to the discovery that turned a search into a criminal probe.

Lions Bay on May 15

Stewart McLean was last seen at his home in Lions Bay on May 15, then reported missing on May 18. By May 19, the Squamish RCMP said they were “very concerned for Stewart’s health and well-being,” a rare public signal that the search had already become urgent.

On May 21, the RCMP said it was transitioning the missing-person investigation to the homicide team after investigative efforts uncovered evidence that led investigators to believe McLean was the victim of homicide. Investigators later found his remains in Lions Bay, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said he was found dead.

IHIT Takes Over

That shift matters because it changes the case from looking for a missing man to building a homicide file, with IHIT and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service working alongside police. For people who knew McLean or had information tied to his last movements, the practical stake is simple: the file is now being treated as a death investigation, not a search for someone still out there.

The evidence trail also narrows the public role. Anyone who saw McLean after May 15, or who has information tied to his time in Lions Bay, now has a more urgent reason to come forward while detectives piece together the sequence that ran from May 15 to May 21.

Jodi Caplan Remembers McLean

Jodi Caplan said on May 22, “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved client, Stew McLean,” and added, “I was fortunate to have worked with Stew for more than 10 years.” She described him as “dedicated, professional, eager, and endlessly funny!” and said “what a truly great guy he was, and how deeply he will be missed.”

McLean had been working steadily as an actor since 2015, most recently guest starring as a barfly on Virgin River. He also appeared on Arrow, Supernatural and The Irrational, and worked as a producer on CLOUD Van-Demic! and Please Look Away Vol. 2. That resume gives the loss a second layer: this is not just a police case, but the disappearance of a working performer with years of credits and industry ties.

Lucas Talent Inc. posted a tribute to McLean on Facebook on May 22, and that public farewell matched the hard turn in the investigation. The case now sits with homicide investigators, and the next meaningful developments will come from what they learn about McLean’s final days in Lions Bay.
