62nd Calgary Marathon Draws Tens of Thousands in Calgary
Thousands of people are expected for the calgary marathon this weekend as the 62nd edition returns to Calgary. The event now spans six different races across Saturday and Sunday, and it will force road closures and detours beginning at 4:45 AM both days.
The marathon has run annually since 1963, except for 2020, when it did not happen. That history now runs alongside a much larger field than the first race, which started at Glenmore Stadium with 19 men.
Saturday Races in Calgary
Saturday brings the shortest event, the diaper dash, along with the kids’ race, the five-kilometre race and the 10-kilometre race. Those four events spread the weekend traffic before the longer races arrive on Sunday.
Road work for the event starts early. Temporary parking signs will begin appearing up to 12 hours ahead of time, and RamsayMacdonald Avenue SE will be closed for the entire street.
Sunday Half Marathon
The 21.1 kilometre half marathon and the 42.2 kilometre full marathon are set for Sunday, keeping the busiest closures in place for the second day of racing. In Downtown East and Inglewood, 11 Avenue will have north and south curb lanes closed from 4 Street SE to 14 Street SW.
9 Avenue SE will also have closures from 6 Street to 12 Street SE to Inglewood Bridge. With tens of thousands expected across the weekend, the practical effect for drivers is simple: plan around the closures before 4:45 AM and use the posted detours.
