Sophie Whitehouse Leads Charlton Athletic Women to Penalty Shootout Win
Charlton Athletic Women beat Leicester City 2-1 on penalties at The Valley to secure promotion to the Women's Super League. The match finished 0-0 after normal time and extra time, and Sophie Whitehouse made four saves in the shoot-out.
That lifted Charlton into the WSL for the 2026-27 season and sent Leicester into WSL2 after the play-off. Leicester had finished bottom of the WSL after losing their last 11 league matches, while Charlton arrived third in WSL2, two points behind Crystal Palace.
Whitehouse decides at The Valley
Whitehouse was the difference in the shoot-out. Noemie Mouchon had her penalty saved, and Ellie Mason scored for Leicester, but Charlton still came through 2-1 on penalties.
Gilly Flaherty captured the scale of the display on Two at The Valley, saying: “Absolutely incredible. Whitehouse what an exceptional performance. Not just in the game, not just in extra time but to make four penalty saves. I'm lost for words.”
Charlton's route from WSL2
Charlton had spent the season near the top of WSL2 and finished third, two points behind Crystal Palace, before taking their place in the promotion-relegation play-off. The result now puts them among the teams in a WSL that will expand from 12 to 14 clubs next season.
For Leicester, the defeat ends a season that had already left them at the bottom of the WSL and on an 11-match losing run. The shoot-out at The Valley turned that slide into relegation, while Charlton's four saves from Whitehouse turned one nil-nil into promotion.
