Joe Gelhardt: Hull threaten legal action before Wembley final

joe gelhardt faces a Wembley final clouded by a legal threat. Hull City owner Acun Ilicali said the club would take action if they do not beat Middlesbrough on Saturday. The dispute is tied to the decision that put Middlesbrough back into the play-offs after Southampton's spying breach.

Ilicali made the threat outside Wembley Stadium before kick-off, saying, "Our legal team says that we have to go for action, that's for sure." He added, "Here, all we want is justice. If justice is broken, nobody will enjoy football."

Hull are due to face Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final on Saturday, but the club owner said he did not want to discuss the outcome of the EFL's independent disciplinary commission hearing before the day of the final because he did not want to distract the players. That left the football itself sitting beside a legal fight that could outlast the match.

Southampton's removal

The immediate trigger came when Southampton were expelled from the play-offs on Tuesday after admitting to spying on Middlesbrough's training session. Their appeal was rejected on Wednesday, just 72 hours before kick-off in the final. Middlesbrough, who had lost to Southampton in the semi-final, were reinstated after that decision.

Hull's objection is not to the final alone but to how the competition was handled after the breach. Ilicali called the decision to let Middlesbrough re-enter the play-offs "unbelievable" and asked, "If this action was so big that a team is out of the play-offs, why didn't they let them not play the semi-final, investigate and take Southampton out and put Wrexham in?"

Hull City's challenge

He followed that by saying, "Why is Wrexham out now? Put Wrexham in and continue the competition." The argument is simple from Hull's side: if the breach was severe enough to remove Southampton, then the remedies should have been applied before the semi-final rather than after Middlesbrough had already been beaten.

Ilicali took over Hull City in 2022, and this is now his most public clash with the competition's disciplinary process. Saturday's final still decides promotion on the pitch, but Hull have already made clear that they are preparing for a legal route if the result goes against them.
