Grabow Wins 1,600 at Black Hills Conference Meet in Hill City

Tate Grabow won the 1,600-meter run at the Black Hills Conference meet in Custer on Thursday, May 14, and the Hill City runner crossed in 4:30.17. The result adds another conference distance win to a season already built around his track resume.

Grabow and Hill City

Grabow is a two-time state champion in cross country, and he won last year’s 3,200-meter title on the track. That background explains why the 1,600 looked less like a surprise and more like another race he has learned to control.

Distance running is a complicated equation for athletes trying to balance pace, positioning and finish speed, and Grabow solved it at Custer. His 4:30.17 finish gave Hill City a clear result in one of the Black Hills Conference meet’s featured races.

Custer Meet Result

The conference win also arrives late enough in the spring to matter. The state track and field meet begins on Thursday, May 28, leaving Grabow with a strong mark as the next stage approaches.

For Hill City, the performance keeps the focus on a runner who has already won at the state level in two different distance events. That makes the 1,600-meter title in Custer part of the same pattern rather than a standalone result.
