Acun Ilicali Owns Hull City After £20m January 2022 Deal — Who Owns Hull City Fc
Acun Ilicali owns Hull City after buying the club from the Allam family in January 2022 for £20m. That answer has not changed since the deal, and he has been at the helm for almost four-and-a-half years.
Ilicali and Hull City
Ilicali said, “I love the city – for me, it’s therapy,” and described Hull as a club he has kept steering through repeated changes around him. The ownership itself has stayed fixed since the January 2022 purchase, even as the dugout has not.
He also explained his approach to those changes with a line that fits the club’s recent turnover: “If you think you are not the cleverest or the most intelligent person in the world, then you have to accept that you make some mistakes,” and, “When I make mistakes, I say: ‘This is a mistake, let’s change it.’”
Allam family sale
The Allam family owned Hull before the sale to Ilicali, ending their long run in charge. Their popularity had already sunk after a plan to change the club’s name to Hull Tigers, and the ownership shift closed that chapter with a £20m transaction in January 2022.
That price is the clearest marker of the handover: Hull did not drift into new ownership, it was bought outright, and Ilicali has remained the owner ever since. The club’s current identity is tied to that deal, not to any later managerial changes.
Hull’s recent turnover
Since then, Hull have moved through Grant McCann, Shota Arveladze, Liam Rosenior, Rubén Sellés and Tim Walter, while Jared Dublin has served as sporting director and Sergej Jakirovic is now head coach. Hull finished 19th in 2022, then 15th the following full season.
A year later, Rosenior left after Hull finished three points off the playoffs in seventh. Last season they survived on goal difference, Sellés lost his job, and in 2024 Walter was appointed before Hull won three of 18 matches under him.
The latest proof of where the club stands came this season, when Hull finished sixth on the final day, beat third-placed Millwall over two legs and reached the playoff final against Middlesbrough at Wembley on Saturday. For supporters, the ownership question now has a simple answer: Hull belong to Ilicali, and the football side is still trying to turn that ownership into a Premier League return.
