Carter Bear Leads Canada Past Slovenia 3-1 at World Championship

carter bear was on the scoreboard in Canada’s 3-1 win over Slovenia on Friday at the 2026 IIHF World Championship, and Emmitt Finnie drove the result with a goal and an assist. Canada moved into sole possession of first place in Group B and stretched its tournament start to five straight victories.

Finnie Drives Canada

Finnie’s two-point night set the pace for Canada. Denton Mateychuk and Dylan Cozens scored the other goals, giving Canada three different finishers in a game that stayed tight enough to leave the final margin at two.

Jet Greaves backed it up with 13 saves to record the win. That workload was enough for Canada to control the afternoon without needing a heavy offensive explosion, and Zach Whitecloud logged 16:45 of ice-time while finishing minus-1.

Group B After Friday

The win was more than another entry in the record column. It gave Canada sole possession of the top spot in Group B, which means Friday’s result changed the shape of the standings at the tournament rather than just adding to the total.

Canada’s five straight victories also kept the opening run intact at the world championship in Switzerland. The scoring spread mattered here: Finnie supplied the playmaking, Mateychuk and Cozens finished chances, and Greaves handled the rest with a short list of shots to turn aside.

Finland, Great Britain, Saturday Slate

Friday’s schedule elsewhere produced Finland’s 4-0 win over Great Britain, with Ville Heinola scoring twice. Mat Robson stopped 43 of 47 shots for Great Britain, while Olli Määttä helped hold them to nine shots on goal over 60 minutes.

That result left Finland back alongside Switzerland atop Group A with matching 5-0-0-0 records. Saturday’s early slate then moved to the United States against Latvia at 4:20 a.m. MT, followed by Slovakia against Czechia at 8:20 a.m. MT.
