Ksl: Woman taken into custody after Kids Empire shooting

ksl: A woman was taken into custody after a shooting Friday night inside Kids Empire in Salt Lake City. Police said the dispute involved two young children and ended with her ex-husband being shot while multiple families were inside the indoor playground.

Salt Lake City police lieutenant Cody Lougy said the shooting happened about 6:40 p.m. A man was rushed by paramedics to the hospital in critical condition after the woman used her own gun during the dispute.

Lougy said a good Samaritan moved in to disarm the woman before a responding Salt Lake City police officer arrived. The woman was then taken into police custody, and multiple witnesses were taken in for questioning as part of the investigation.

Police believed the man was the woman's ex-husband. The shooting took place while multiple families were inside Kids Empire, turning a custody dispute into a public safety response inside a business built for children and parents.

The business will remain closed while the investigation continues. For anyone who was inside when the shots were fired, the immediate next step is the police investigation now centered on witness accounts, the disarming of the woman, and what led to the shooting inside the playground.
