Oli McBurnie Sends Hull City Up 1-0 — Football Results Today

football results today ended with Hull City going up. Oli McBurnie scored in second-half stoppage time to beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, and that single goal sent Hull back to the Premier League for the first time in nine years.

McBurnie Decides Wembley

McBurnie’s finish was the only goal of the final. Hull needed that one moment because Middlesbrough kept the score level until stoppage time, and the striker delivered at the end of the game rather than in the run of play.

The result gave Hull promotion in the club’s biggest match of the season. It also turned a tight final into a season-defining one, with the margin left as narrow as the scoreline.

Jakirovic’s Season Of Problems

Sergej Jakirovic had been hired in June, after Hull had already been hit by a transfer embargo in the summer. The embargo stopped the club from signing players for a fee over three windows before it was reduced to two on appeal, and that restriction sat over a squad that finished last season 21st in the 24-team Championship.

Hull also stayed up only on the final day and only on goal difference last season. Five years ago, the club had dropped into the third tier, which makes this return to the Premier League a sharp reversal from where the team stood not long ago.

Acun Ilicali And Hull’s Turnaround

Acun Ilicali bought Hull from the Allam family in January 2022, and the promotion closes a run that has moved the club from the third tier to Wembley winners. Hull had only four training sessions to prepare for Southampton after beating Millwall in the semi-final, then only one training session with Middlesbrough in mind after Southampton were expelled from the EFL’s showpiece event.

After the final, Jakirovic said: “A lot of players are crying — of course from happiness. I think we are not aware of everything that we achieved, today or this whole season. It’s an unbelievable journey. So many problems. Everything that we achieved is unbelievable. I’m very proud of everyone in the club.”

For Hull, the immediate change is simple: the club is back in the Premier League, and McBurnie’s stoppage-time goal is the line that takes them there.
