Taylen Green Opens Browns News Path to QB3 Role — Browns News

Taylen Green has a path to make the Browns news roster, and the rookie quarterback could end up as Cleveland’s QB3 if the team has to choose between him and Dillon Gabriel. In a crowded room that already includes Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, Green’s size, mobility and draft status keep him in the conversation.

Green’s climb in Cleveland

Green, a rookie from Arkansas, came into the league after a college path that began at Boise State, where he spent two years with the Broncos before transferring. He was taken in the recent draft and listed at 6'6 and 227 lbs., a frame that gives Cleveland a different look at the position if it wants a developmental passer with movement traits.

His case is built on upside, not polish. Green put on a show during the NFL Combine in February, and he has immense upside as a runner. The Browns offense will utilize RPO situations, which gives him a chance to fit into concepts that can take advantage of that ability while the staff works through his other flaws.

Watson, Sanders and Gabriel

The competition around him is part of the story. Deshaun Watson is trying to revive what is left of his career, while Sanders and Gabriel are both fighting for a chance to start and, at the same time, trying to keep their career arcs intact. That makes every roster spot in the room matter, especially for a rookie still trying to establish a place in the pecking order.

Green is not arriving as a finished product. His footwork is a work in progress, he needs to quiet his feet and improve his lower body mechanics, and he still has to get better at going through his progressions. He also has a tendency to go big play hunting instead of taking the easy plays that are given to him, and his accuracy on short throws remains an area to clean up.

Gabriel’s edge and Green’s fit

Gabriel may be further along in the mental makeup of playing quarterback, but his skillset does not translate as well to the current iteration of the Browns offense. That opens the door for Green if Cleveland has to make a choice, because the fit with the offense and the chance to develop behind the scenes both work in his favor.

If the Browns cut Green, it is unlikely he clears waivers. That leaves Cleveland with a straightforward decision if the room narrows: Green is the more likely quarterback to stay, and he could hold the QB3 job while the team sees whether his size, running ability and arm talent can grow into something more.
