Steve Holland on Carrick's 2028 United deal
steve holland Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as permanent head coach until 2028 after a January interim spell that lifted the club from sixth and out of both cup competitions to a guaranteed third-place finish. Carrick said he will target the biggest honours again, a shift that follows a run of 11 wins and three draws in 16 games in all competitions.
Manchester United back Carrick
Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim in January and quickly changed the direction of the season. United were sixth and had already gone out of both cup competitions when he stepped in, but they recovered enough to secure a return to the Champions League and lock in third going into the final day of the league season.
That rise was enough for Jason Wilcox to recommend him for the full-time job, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family signing off on the appointment. Carrick’s first stint in charge also carried weight because it was not his first run in the seat; he had a previous interim spell of three games in 2021 after working as a coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
Carrick's dressing-room pull
The results were matched by the response inside the squad. Kobbie Mainoo said he wanted “to die for him on the pitch,” while Matheus Cunha was among the United players who offered support to Carrick. Bruno Fernandes also delivered under his leadership, equalling the Premier League assist record and winning the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award.
Carrick’s appointment comes less than a year after he was sacked by Middlesbrough, a sharp turnaround for a 44-year-old who spent 12 years at United before leaving in 2018. He now inherits a side that will be back in Europe next season, with the squad expected to be strengthened considerably and a replacement for Casemiro mentioned as pending.
Old Trafford and 2028
For United, the move is a bet on continuity after a season that flipped from uncertainty to a third-place finish. For Carrick, it is a return to the club where he spent 12 years as a player and now gets the chance to carry the responsibility of leading “our special football club” into a busier European schedule and a longer contract horizon.
