Noah Schnapp Dismisses Secret Episode Theory as Stranger Things Cast Reacts
Noah Schnapp said the stranger things cast spent part of the finale rollout answering a theory that Netflix had hidden a ninth episode. The Will Byers actor said fans flooded him with messages after the feature-length ending dropped on New Year’s Eve 2025, turning a rumor about Episode 9 into a talking point of its own.
New Year's Eve 2025 Finale
The fifth and final season arrived in three parts, and the last installment brought Hawkins, Eleven and the Upside Down to an end. That structure left room for online speculation, but the cast response was blunt: Schnapp said, “I promise you we did not film another episode.”
He added, “I don’t know where people got that from, I’ve never seen so many people convinced of something so wrong.” The scale of that reaction matters because the theory did not stay small; it spread under the name Conformity Gate and suggested the finale was an illusion created by Vecna, with a surprise ninth episode set to emerge later as the true ending.
Jamie Campbell Bower on Vecna
Jamie Campbell Bower, who played Vecna, said, “That was crazy, that was f**king crazy.” He said fans had latched onto a social media video he recorded while promoting an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, which helped feed the belief that the show had not really ended.
Shawn Levy called the idea of a legendary, fabled Episode 9 “baffling” and said, “The sort of wishful thinking, legendary, fabled episode nine – that was baffling and thank God by that point I had learned not to even try engaging with people online.” He also said, “The show ends but how we envision these characters moving forward is sort of up to us, it’s a little choose-your-own-adventure,” which fits the finale’s deliberate opening for interpretation around Eleven’s fate.
Levy's Ending Strategy
Bower and Schnapp both said they believe Eleven survived, while Levy said the Duffers delivered a complete ending that still leaves viewers room to imagine what happens next. His view is the cleanest read on the situation: the series is over, the rumor is not, and the fandom’s reach was strong enough to turn one ending into a false second act.
