Memorial Day Usa marks May 25 observance rooted in Civil War

memorial day usa falls on Monday, May 25, 2025, as a day for Americans to remember U.S. military members who died while serving. The holiday also arrives as many people treat the long weekend as the unofficial start of summer, with travel and discounts on items such as mattresses and lawn mowers.

The day is observed on the last Monday of May, and the Congressional Research Service describes it as a time for reflection and remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence.

Charleston and Waterloo

The holiday’s roots trace to the American Civil War, which killed more than 600,000 service members, Union and Confederate, between 1861 and 1865. David Blight, a Yale history professor, pointed to a May 1, 1865 observance in Charleston, South Carolina, as a possible first Memorial Day event.

Blight said, “What happened in Charleston does have the right to claim to be first, if that matters.” He said as many as 10,000 people held a parade, heard speeches and dedicated the graves of Union dead there, after 267 Union troops who died at a Confederate prison had been buried in a mass grave.

Members of Black churches later buried those 267 troops in individual graves. Waterloo, New York, also began a formal observance on May 5, 1866, and was later proclaimed to be the holiday’s birthplace. Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, traced its first observance to October 1864, according to the Library of Congress.

Decoration Day in 1868

The first national observance of what was then called Decoration Day took place on May 30, 1868, after Union veterans called for decorating war graves with flowers that were in bloom. By 1869, warned that the holiday could become “sacrilegious” and no longer “sacred” if it focused too much on pomp, dinners and oratory.

That split remains visible in the holiday’s modern use: a national day of remembrance on one side, and a travel-heavy three-day weekend on the other. For readers marking the day in 2025, the clearest observance is simple — pause at 3 p.m. and remember the service members the holiday was created to honor.
