Evangelos Marinakis Filmed in Athens Altercation During Final

evangelos marinakis was filmed appearing to have a heated altercation during the Euroleague Basketball final in Athens on Sunday, with footage showing him in a ripped shirt and separated by security and a barrier. He was at the event to watch Olympiakos beat Real Madrid 92-85.

Athens arena footage

The video shared on social media does not show the person Marinakis was arguing with, but Greek media reported that the other man was Grigoris Dimitriadis, a former close adviser to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The clip placed the Nottingham Forest and Olympiakos owner in the stands during the final, not on the edge of the action, and made the altercation the central talking point around a game Olympiakos won by seven points.

Marinakis and Forest

Marinakis took over Nottingham Forest in 2017, and the Athens footage comes after a season in which the club changed managers three times. Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche all left during the campaign before Vitor Pereira secured Premier League safety.

Forest finished 16th after drawing 1-1 with Bournemouth on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday. They also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League before losing 4-1 on aggregate to Aston Villa, leaving Marinakis with a club that stayed up but still ended the year well short of the top half.

Previous Marinakis sanctions

The Athens scene also lands against a backdrop of punishment already on Marinakis' record. In 2024 he was found guilty of improper conduct and given a five-game stadium ban for spitting on the floor as match officials walked past after Forest lost 1-0 to Fulham.

Three months later, the Football Association described him as a central character in "an attack on the integrity of a match official on an unparalleled scale" after a Forest social media post about VAR Stuart Attwell. Forest were fined £750,000, and the FA also called the post "ill-chosen and irresponsible" after the club's official X account questioned Attwell's integrity following three penalty decisions in a defeat at Everton.

Sunday's footage adds a new flashpoint around a figure already tied to disciplinary cases in English football, with the visual of a ripped shirt in an arena stand likely to keep attention on Marinakis as Forest move on from a season that ended with safety but not much calm.
