Derry City Vs Shelbourne: Lynch Faces Five-Game Drought at Brandywell
Derry City vs Shelbourne arrives at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Monday with both sides carrying form pressure into the League of Ireland Premier Division. Derry are seeking their first win in six games, while Shelbourne arrive unbeaten in five and chasing a third straight victory.
Tiernan Lynch and Joey O'Brien
Derry sit sixth on 21 points, 10 short of the top three and only two above Sligo Rovers in the relegation playoff place. Tiernan Lynch’s side have drawn 2-2 with Waterford and 0-0 with St Patrick's Athletic in their last two league outings, and their winless run reached five after the 1-0 loss to Drogheda United on May 8.
Shelbourne have taken the sharper path into the fixture. Joey O'Brien’s team beat St Pat's 1-0 on Friday and followed that with a 2-1 win over Waterford, sealed by Sean Boyd’s stoppage-time winner, to record back-to-back wins for the first time in 2026.
Brandywell selection questions
Derry’s team sheet is under pressure before a ball is kicked. Brian Maher has been sidelined since February, Robert Slevin is out with a knock, and Jamie Stott misses out after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season against St Patrick's. Lynch could go with Conor Barr, Patrick McClean and Cameron Dummigan in front of Eddie Beach.
The home form adds another layer to the problem. Derry have won just one of their last five home games, including the 1-0 victory over Shamrock Rovers on April 24, and they also lost 2-1 to Shelbourne on March 13 before beating them 2-1 at Tolka Park last month.
Table pressure for both clubs
Shelbourne sit fifth, seven points behind third-placed Bohemians and five points above the division’s relegation playoff spot. They finished third in 2025, while Derry were runners-up, but the gap between those seasons and Monday’s meeting has narrowed into a contest shaped by points, not reputation.
That leaves the Brandywell match with direct stakes at both ends of the table. Derry need points to stop the slide toward the playoff zone, and Shelbourne can keep contact with the top three by extending the unbeaten run that started with a 2-1 win over Dundalk.
