Graeme Shinnie Leaves Aberdeen Fc After 344-Game Run
graeme shinnie leaves aberdeen fc next month when his contract expires, ending a long run that included two spells, a captaincy and 344 appearances for the club. Aberdeen lose a 34-year-old leader who lifted the 2025 Scottish Cup and became the first Aberdeen captain for 35 years to win it.
Shinnie Rejects New Deal
Aberdeen offered him a two-year contract extension that included a pathway into coaching, but he chose to move on so he could keep playing more regularly. Stephen Robinson called him an "outstanding leader" and said, "His dedication, work rate and influence within the dressing room have been invaluable and he has captained this club with distinction," before adding, "We understand his desire to continue playing regularly, something I could not guarantee going into next season."
He first joined Aberdeen in 2015 after leaving Inverness Caledonian Thistle, then left for Derby County in 2019 and returned to Pittodrie in 2023. Aberdeen say he departs as a "true Dons legend," and his record sits 20th on the club's all-time appearance list.
Pittodrie Leadership Shift
Shinnie’s exit also strips Aberdeen of a player who made 32 appearances in European competition, the 12th-most in club history, while starting only half of the team’s league games last season. Aberdeen finished ninth, and his reduced league role sits alongside the club’s need to reshape the squad after losing a captain who had been central to the dressing room and the cup win at Hampden.
He is now expected to return to Inverness Caledonian Thistle after their promotion to the Championship, giving him a route back into regular football rather than a coaching ladder at Pittodrie. For Aberdeen, the immediate task is filling a captain’s voice as well as the minutes he still covered.
