Rio Ferdinand Backs 37-Year-Old Lewandowski for United Move
rio ferdinand wants Manchester United to sign Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer this summer. The former United defender said the 37-year-old would be a sensible option even with wages that could run high. The idea fits a squad that has already moved on from Casemiro and may still need more attack support.
Ferdinand’s Lewandowski pitch
“Lewandowski isn’t a bad shout either if they’re going to get another striker,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. He pointed to the Poland forward’s experience and the work a player like that could do for Benjamin Sesko.
“If we brought him in, look at the experience he has, the amount of learning that Sesko will do…” Ferdinand said. He then added: “If you believe Sesko is the man for the next five years, the learning he could do behind Lewandowski who is a wonderful, humble human being.”
Lewandowski’s Barcelona record
Lewandowski is set to end his four-year spell at Barcelona, the club he joined from Bayern Munich in 2022. He has scored 120 goals in 193 appearances for Barcelona and helped them win three La Liga titles.
His Bayern record is even larger: 344 goals in 375 games, plus eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League. Barcelona are already searching for a replacement, which opens the door for a summer move if a deal is pursued.
United’s summer rebuild
Manchester United finished the 2025-26 season third in the Premier League and ended it with an impressive win over Brighton. Michael Carrick was then appointed permanently on a two-year contract after his run of results as interim manager.
United are expected to welcome at least two midfielders this summer, and Manuel Ugarte is possibly up for sale. Ferdinand also said Lewandowski would be a sensible signing even if “the numbers might be crazy in terms of wages.”
For United, the question is not whether Lewandowski still has a scoring record. It is whether a free transfer for a 37-year-old can strengthen the squad while Sesko keeps building under Carrick.
