Arne Slot Liverpool Transfer Updates: Liverpool Close in on Etiënne Reijnen

Arne Slot Liverpool transfer updates: Liverpool are closing in on the appointment of Etiënne Reijnen to the coaching staff, a move that would add to Arne Slot’s backroom team while the club is still chasing Champions League qualification. The deal is not done, but it is moving forward.

Slot and Reijnen at Liverpool

Liverpool are working on a deal for Feyenoord assistant manager Reijnen, who played with Slot at PEC Zwolle and became Slot’s assistant at Feyenoord in 2023. Slot wanted to bring the 39-year-old with him when he first arrived at Anfield, but work permit issues stopped that move.

Slot made clear on Friday how he wants the process handled. “As long as things are not done, then I will not be commenting on who we are signing or who we don’t,” he said. He added: “It is fair to say that I have worked with him before and I have a very high regard for him in terms of the coach he is.”

Reijnen’s Path With Slot

The pair’s link runs through two jobs, not one. They were together at PEC Zwolle before Reijnen later followed Slot into the Feyenoord set-up, and that history is why Liverpool’s move carries more weight than a routine staff addition.

Dennis te Kloese called Reijnen “simply a very talented young coach. He doesn’t just go abroad to work for no reason.” That view matches Liverpool’s push to back Slot’s request for more support this summer as he works to build a stronger staff around him.

Champions League Pressure

The timing matters because Liverpool have yet to seal Champions League qualification. Slot has said the focus has to stay on securing a top-five finish, and he also said Champions League football is vital for building “a more solid base” going into next season.

That runs alongside a tense end to the season at Anfield. Several first-team players liked Mohamed Salah’s critical social media post last Saturday, and Slot’s final home-day focus is now on results before any send-offs. Liverpool face Brentford on Sunday, when Salah and Andy Robertson will say farewell to Anfield.

For Liverpool, the Reijnen move is part football decision and part signal. If the appointment goes through, Slot gets a familiar coach he wanted two years ago, and the club adds another piece to the structure he is trying to build before next season starts.
