McGrath and Guelfi ruled out until after Essendon Football Club bye
Essendon Football Club’s injury list grew again on Friday night, with Andrew McGrath and Matt Guelfi both sidelined until after the round 15 bye. Sam Durham will also miss next week’s clash with Waalitj Marawar after entering concussion protocols.
The loss to Richmond by 18 points at the Dreamtime at the 'G match came with a heavy personnel cost. McGrath fractured his jaw and Guelfi tore a hamstring, while Durham was ruled into the concussion process after a first-quarter collision with Tom Lynch.
McGrath surgery, Guelfi tear
McGrath was taken to hospital for scans that showed the fracture, and he will undergo surgery this week. Guelfi’s injury came in the opening minutes, when the hamstring tear ended his night almost as soon as it started.
Those two absences stretch through Essendon’s bye in round 15, which leaves the club without its captain and a small forward for the immediate run of games. The timing is awkward because the side already went into the Richmond match with 13 players unavailable.
Durham and May updates
Durham’s status shortens Essendon’s midfield options for Sunday’s clash with the Eagles. His collision with Lynch in the first quarter was enough to send him into concussion protocols, putting him out for at least one match.
Archie May gave the club one piece of better news from the same game. He took a heavy hit in the last quarter, but he was cleared of serious damage and is expected to be available against the Eagles.
Essendon’s short-term load
Daniel McPherson described the night bluntly after the loss. “It was a tough night for our group,” he said, adding: “Losing players early in a game is particularly difficult as it puts enormous pressure on rotations and player loads.”
He also said: “We were down to just one on the bench for most of the game.” That detail fits the bigger problem Essendon now has to manage: a growing injury toll before meetings with the Eagles, Carlton and Narrm before the round 15 bye.
McPherson said: “Andy, Matt, Sam and Archie are all in good hands.” For Essendon, the immediate task is simple enough — get through Sunday with enough healthy bodies to hold the line while the longer recoveries play out.
