South Metro Fire Rescue responds after sailboat capsizes at Chatfield

A group of boaters was rescued after their sailboat capsized at Chatfield State Park on Sunday afternoon. Around 1:45 p.m., chatfield drew a water rescue response from South Metro Fire Rescue and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Park rangers found the capsized sailboat and helped the occupants onto the CPW boat. South Metro Fire Rescue then offered medical evaluations to the boaters.

The response began after reports of a water rescue needed at the park. The boaters were taken off the sailboat after it capsized, and the rescue moved them onto the CPW boat before any medical checks.

Chatfield Park Rangers are investigating the incident. The account leaves one immediate issue open for the people involved: whether any of the boaters needed extra medical attention after the rescue.

Colorado Boating Safety

The park incident came as Colorado ranks fourth in the nation for dangerous boating, and paddleboarding accidents caused three deaths over the past year and a half. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the most common injuries or fatalities happen when people are not wearing lifejackets or when boarders are not tethering themselves to the craft.

CPW also listed basic safety steps for watercraft users: have life jackets for everyone, especially minors, wear a whistle or other noise-making device for emergency calls for help, and operate watercraft in zones designated for boating, paddleboarding or canoeing. Those precautions are the clearest takeaways for anyone heading onto the water at Chatfield or elsewhere in Colorado.

The rescue ended with all occupants brought aboard the CPW boat and evaluated by South Metro Fire Rescue, while park rangers continued their investigation. For boaters, the immediate practical step is the simplest one CPW outlined: carry the required gear, wear it, and stay in the right zone.
