Gostisbehere Sparks 2-1 Canadien Hurricanes Lead After First Period
Shayne Gostisbehere put the canadien hurricanes ahead early, and Carolina carried a 2-1 lead over Montreal after the first period of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final on Monday. The Hurricanes had scored first in all three games of the series, and this one stayed tight through a physical opening 20 minutes at Bell Centre.
Gostisbehere Opens The Scoring
At 8:22 of the first period, Gostisbehere beat Jakub Dobes after taking a pass from Mark Jankowski. That goal gave Carolina the first break in a period that already had a penalty kill, a response from Montreal, and another Hurricanes goal before the horn.
Jalen Chatfield took the game’s first penalty for interference at 4:46, and Montreal got one shot on goal with the man advantage without scoring. Carolina then reset the pace and got the opening goal before the Canadiens answered.
Matheson And Hall Trade Goals
Mike Matheson pulled Montreal level at 15:28 with a wrist shot past Frederik Andersen’s glove hand. Ivan Demidov and Jake Evans assisted on the play, giving the Canadiens their only goal of the period and setting up another quick swing back the other way.
Taylor Hall restored Carolina’s lead at 16:22, winning a battle in front of the net and converting on his third swipe at the puck. K’Andre Miller and Jackson Blake picked up the assists, and the Hurricanes went back in front 2-1 before the period ended.
Bell Centre Pressure Builds
The game arrived in Montreal after the first two meetings were played at Lenovo Center in Raleigh. The Canadiens won Game 1 on the road with Juraj Slafkovsky producing three points, then the Hurricanes answered in Game 2 on Nikolaj Ehlers’ overtime goal, leaving the series tied 1-1 entering Monday.
Kaiden Guhle took Montreal’s first penalty with 59 seconds left in the period, and Carolina started the second period on the power play. For the Canadiens, the first 20 minutes left them chasing again after they had already fallen behind first in each game of the series.
