Alimber Santa Promoted as Astros Add Relief Help

Alimber Santa is headed to the majors, giving the Astros another arm to plug into a bullpen that was built to be a strength in 2026 but has already been tested by Josh Hader’s arm injury. The 23-year-old right-hander arrives with a mid-90's fastball and enough swing-and-miss to matter right away.

Astros Turn to Santa

Houston reportedly promoted Santa after he put together 18 appearances this season with 24 strikeouts in 19 innings. He also walked seven batters and hit three more, a reminder that the same command issues that pushed him through the Rule 5 draft unprotected are still part of the profile.

That tradeoff is the one Houston is making now. Santa is a No. 16 prospect in the system and offers a power arm the club can use while Hader is out, with Bryan Abreu carrying the late innings after a rough April that had already made the relief mix thinner than expected.

Santa's Power Profile

The raw stuff is the reason the move stands out. Santa pairs that fastball with a couple of breaking balls that have graded as decent, enough for the Astros to see a bullpen piece rather than just another live arm in the minors.

But the control problems have followed him, and they are why the organization left him exposed in the Rule 5 draft in the first place. Houston is betting that the strikeout rate and the added velocity can help it survive the gap while Hader remains out and Abreu continues handling the setup work.

Hader And Abreu

The bullpen picture changed fast. Houston entered the season expecting Hader and Abreu to anchor the group, then lost Hader to an arm injury and watched Abreu stumble in April before turning things around.

Santa now steps into that opening with a narrow job description: get outs and give the Astros innings. If the command holds enough for major league hitters, Houston gets another hard-throwing option; if it does not, the same issue that kept him available once will follow him again.
