Darnell Nurse Angle Shows Oilers Need Help Beyond Young Goalies

darnell nurse is part of a goalie discussion that points Edmonton toward help from outside the organization. Connor Ungar, Samuel Jonsson and Eemil Vinni are all in the system, but none of them are anywhere near NHL-ready.

Edmonton’s Internal Options

Ungar is in Bakersfield, Jonsson is in Fort Wayne and Vinni is back in Finland. That leaves the Oilers without a young goalie they can lean on right away, even though the club does have two good, young farmhands in the pipeline and a former second-round draft pick in the mix.

Tristan Jarry is part of the conversation, and he has two years left at $5.4 million. The other name in the discussion is Connor Ingram, and the idea is whether it makes sense to roll out Ingram and Jarry together.

Connor Ingram And Jarry

The cap side matters too. Ingram might only be in the $2.5 million range for one year on July 1, which would push that pairing to about $8 million on the Edmonton Oilers salary cap. That is the kind of number that turns a goalie search into a roster decision.

Stuart Skinner is not coming back, so the Oilers are not looking at a return option from inside the current NHL group. With the prospects still far from ready, the team’s choice is reduced to sorting through outside help and the cost of carrying it.

Skinner And The Cap

That is why the goalie picture now runs through Jarry, Ingram and the cap hit attached to them. Edmonton cannot count on Bakersfield, Fort Wayne or Finland to solve the problem in time for the NHL net.
