Piastri Apology To Albon After Lap 13 Canada Collision
Oscar Piastri made the piastri apology to albon after his Lap 13 collision with Alex Albon at the Canadian Grand Prix ended the Williams driver’s race. The McLaren driver was handed a 10-second time penalty and finished 11th without points.
Lap 13 In Montreal
Piastri locked up and ran into Albon’s Williams on Lap 13 in Montreal, forcing Albon to retire. The contact came after Albon had made a decent start from P18 and gained positions, so the opening part of his race had already moved him into contention before the crash changed it.
Albon’s first reaction was blunt: “Yeah, not ideal.” He also said, “I think that was the first time in the weekend that things just started to feel more comfortable, so we need to understand why because I think what we did wasn’t extreme and it worked out quite well, so some learnings there.”
Piastri And Williams
Piastri said the damage was a shame and that the contact was not intentional. “But yeah, obviously the damage was a shame, and apologies to Alex and to Williams because it certainly wasn’t intentional. I just locked up and went into the side of him.”
He added that McLaren’s tyre call had left the weekend on the back foot. The team started on intermediate tyres, then both cars had to pit for slicks within the first two laps, a sequence that left Piastri describing the day as “one of those days” and saying, “Not a lot went well from any angle really so, yeah, just one of those days to kind of forget and go again in a couple of weeks really.”
Albon’s Lost Points
Albon said points were definitely possible before the collision. “Obviously with Oscar, just unfortunate. I don’t think he planned to do the overtake, just got caught out with the track conditions and it happens. I think points were definitely possible today, but oh well.”
The Williams driver also pointed to the broader cost of the retirement. “Yeah. Honestly, I feel like we’re down on track time,” he said, adding, “I really haven’t done many laps this year so far – either we’re doing pit stops or we’re having DNFs or whatever.”
That made the next part of the weekend even more important for him. “We just need to get some rhythm – get some rhythm into a weekend, get some good laps under my belt, understand the car better, and then just build from there really,” Albon said, before closing with, “It feels like we haven’t really just had a smooth weekend for now. It will come, and just unfortunate but, yeah, let’s hope that’s Monaco.”
