Ben Chorley Sets Southampton Exit for End of June
ben chorley will leave Southampton and Sport Republic at the end of June. The head of UK scouting said it was “the right time” in a LinkedIn statement. His exit lands as Southampton rebuild after being kicked out of the Championship playoffs earlier this month.
Chorley’s Southampton departure
Chorley said, “I’ll be leaving Southampton and Sport Republic at the end of June. It's the right time. Working within a multi-club model as Sporting Director in Europe, and leading the UK side at Southampton, has been a privilege. The experiences—promotions and relegations across the clubs, being involved in hundreds of transfer transactions, and learning from high-level leaders in data, performance, finance, and process—have been invaluable.”
That statement gives the move a firm end point and a clear sense of scale. Chorley’s role covered the UK side at Southampton, and he pointed to promotions, relegations and hundreds of transfer transactions as part of the job he is now leaving behind.
Southampton after Spygate
The departure comes after Southampton were charged with spying on multiple clubs throughout the season, including Middlesbrough ahead of their playoff semi-final first leg. Earlier this month, the punishment pushed Southampton out of the Championship playoffs.
Middlesbrough went on to lose against Hull City in the final after beating Southampton in the semi-final. Both clubs will be in the Championship next season, and Southampton now face a summer without one of the senior figures in their recruitment setup.
Chorley’s exit also lands in a period when Southampton had been in a strong position to push for the Premier League before the playoff sanction. Whether the move had already been planned is unclear, but the timing adds another personnel change to a club already dealing with the fallout from the Spygate case.
