Callum Roberts Set to Leave Scunthorpe United for EFL Move

callum roberts will leave Scunthorpe United in the coming days to sign for an EFL club. The 29-year-old is moving on after a three-year spell in which he led the Iron in scoring and helped drive promotion back to the National League.

Scunthorpe said it had tabled an offer for him to stay for a fourth season, but he turned down a number of offers after the end of the season. Some of those bids were much more lucrative than the club’s offer, and the club’s statement made clear he will depart after deciding the latest opportunity was too good to refuse.

Scunthorpe United and Roberts

Roberts arrived from Aberdeen three years ago for an undisclosed fee after coming through the academy system at Newcastle United. He quickly became central to Scunthorpe’s attack, and his final season underlined that role with 20 league goals in 43 appearances, including 41 starts.

Across all competitions in the season just ended, he made 48 appearances, started 45 times and recorded 32 goal contributions. He finished as Scunthorpe United’s top goalscorer in 2024-25 and repeated that status in the season just ended, giving the club a consistent scoring outlet through the promotion push.

Ernie Storey Memorial Trophy

Roberts also became the first player to retain the Ernie Storey Memorial Trophy for Scunthorpe United. That run of end-of-season recognition matched the numbers: 21 goals in all competitions and a role in a promotion campaign that returned the club to the National League in 2024-25.

The move now leaves Scunthorpe with a gap in the front line and a decision to make after offering him a fourth season. The club ended its statement by saying, “the door always remains open” and “Good luck for the future, Cal!”

For Scunthorpe, the immediate reality is simple: its top scorer is leaving for the EFL, and the replacement task starts as soon as Roberts’ move is completed in the coming days.
