Alcaraz to drop 2,000 points at Atp French Open
Carlos Alcaraz will lose 2,000 atp ranking points when the 2026 French Open begins, even though he will not defend his title because of a serious wrist injury. He stays at No. 2, but the ATP’s rolling 52-week system will strip away the points from his Paris title run as the tournament starts.
Alcaraz and the 2,000-point drop
Alcaraz is on 11,960 points now and will be on 9,960 in a fortnight. He earned the full 2,000 points for winning last year’s French Open, and those points disappear as the 2026 event gets underway.
The setback comes after he saved three match points to beat Jannik Sinner in five sets in last year’s final on Court Philippe-Chatrier. That title sealed his second championship at Roland Garros and kept him in control of the ranking race heading into this season’s clay swing.
Sinner keeps the top spot
Sinner will lose 1,300 points at Roland Garros, but he will remain No. 1 even if he suffers a shock first-round exit. He finished runner-up last year, and his recent clay form includes three consecutive ATP Masters 1000 wins in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
That leaves the top of the rankings more stable than the rest of the draw. Alexander Zverev will sit on 7,305 points even if he wins the tournament, while the field also takes other hits: Lorenzo Musetti will be minus 800 because of a thigh injury, and he is out for the event.
Roland Garros draw pressure
Musetti’s absence removes one of last year’s semifinalists from the bracket. He lost in the last four to Alcaraz 12 months ago, while Novak Djokovic was denied by Sinner in the other semifinal and several other players are carrying points to defend from deep runs.
Quarter-finalists earn 400 points, and the players who reached that round last year included Zverev, Bublik, Tiafoe and Paul. Casper Ruud, seeded 15th, was shocked by Nuno Borges in the second round last year and now finds himself in Djokovic’s section.
